Most people buy a desk mat one size too small. Here is how to get it right first time.
Quick answer
- 36″ × 18″ — the right choice for most setups. Full-size keyboard plus a genuine forearm sweep.
- 24″ × 14″ — for desks under about 47″ wide, or if you share the desk with a laptop.
- 48″ × 24″ — full-desk coverage for dual monitors, streaming setups and heavy cable clutter.
- 9.5″ × 8″ mouse pad — office work, travel, second desks. Too small for low-sensitivity gaming.
Measure two things first
1. Your desk. Measure the usable width and depth — behind the monitor stand, not the full desk. A mat deeper than your desk is worse than one slightly too small.
2. Your sweep. Make the widest single mouse movement you make in a game. If you play low sensitivity you are moving from the elbow, and that sweep needs to fit on the mat alongside your keyboard.
Size by play style
- Low sensitivity FPS (400–800 DPI, big arm movements) — 36″ minimum, 48″ if the desk allows.
- Normal sensitivity / mixed use — 36″×18″ is comfortable, 24″×14″ workable.
- Work-first desks — 24″×14″ keeps things tidy without dominating the desk.
Wall art sizes
For the wall above a desk, 12″×18″ suits a single print beside a monitor, 16″×20″ works as a centred piece, and 18″×24″ is a statement above a wide desk. Hang the centre at roughly eye level when seated.
